Hey all,

I just joined and thought I'd say hi o/.

I'm new to lock sport, still learning.. but from the looks of it it's a hobby where the learning will never stop, that's ok because it's a lot of fun :)

Outside of locksport I'm an OSS developer, so know most the fun is the community. That's definitely one of the driving factors that got me interested!

Hi Mate, don’t worry, about 50% of us don’t live in the UK.
The fun definitely is in the community, and you have just found the best one around.

That is fine if you are outside the UK, but in that case you need to buy the beer.
I'll have a Guinness please.

Bloody Aussies, count the silverware lads. Bastards stole Split Enz and Phar Lap*, they'll be nicking the UKLS silver plate collection next.

*You can keep Russell Crowe.

Pfft, finders keepers, we're a country of immigrants, if they want to call the place home we welcome them (especially famous ones).. except you can have Russel back, we don't want him ;P

Surely the silver plate collection is secured behind lock and key... well maybe the key is redundant :P

Thanks everyone!

Hey on a more serious note Matt we're starting to develop a reasonable community of pickers in NZ / Aus.

Have you been in touch with any other ockers, have you got a line to locks and tools, have you thought about going to OzSecCon in June, and where in Aus are you?

I'm based in the South Coast of NSW in a small beach town because I work remotely, so why not (I used to live in both Canberra and Melbourne). So far locks have been hard to come by.. well without spending a bunch of money for new locks or paying large delivery payments from US ebay sellers. So at the moment I only have a few. But am always got my eye out now :)

I've tried to contact the local Locksmith in the area, but didn't get any reply.

I'm managed to get picks and lock disassembly tools from online stores (pickmylock, pickpals, lockpinksaustralia) which have been reasonable. I've also recently joined the Australian locksport guild on FB. So trying to get connected where ever I can :)

I just heard about OzSecCon a few weeks back. And yeah I definitely planning on being there! (just need to play my cards right with the boss, i.e the wife). Might even see if I can do the disc-detainer picking class (not that I'd have any idea what I was doing).

But honestly I found all this out by luck and stumbling round, so any pointers for those of us on this side of the planet would be awesome! Because I'm in a small beach town, I think I'm the only one locally. But I do get to Melbourne and Canberra regularly due to family.

Yeah, the problem with Aus and NZ is that we are few and very far between - you're probably the only lockpicker for miles around. Unfortunately locksmiths in Aus are very often openly hostile to hobby pickers so you probably won't get a lot of joy there but it's worth asking around for scrap locks in exchange for beer/pies/cakes just in case you strike a good one.

Most of the Aussie locksmiths get their back up at the very mention of picking and do a rant about how picking is illegal, you're not allowed to own tools blah blah blah which is laughably old school BUT you need to download, read, and inwardly digest the lockpicking legalities booklet that PickPals provides and figure out exactly what you're allowed to do. The rules vary by state as I'm sure you know, which is one of the reasons OzSecCon is held in Vic. You can own handcuffs in ACT but not NSW, go figure.

I used to moderate ALG before I abandoned Facebook but Tipene is still on there, he's a mine of information but unfortunately ALG isn't as good as it once was. Here is better, honestly.

There's one Aussie Locksmith I know of who is very active in the Locksport community. His names Paul Springett and he's been a Iockie for years. Here's a link to his most recent video. Check out his channel he might have some useful contacts for you.

Ahh good to know. So at least my experience with the local lockies here is unfortunately the norm. Re:ALG - shame maybe I missed the golden age of the group.. but luckily ignorance is bliss and still it's a great resource for the our side of the world :)

Rack off, Bouncer! That would be the appropriate Aussie term, yeah? Just joking, of course, glad to have you here. I'll be in Melbourne later this year in fact, come and say hi if you can.

Lol close enough ;P Melbourne, cool, you coming down for OzSecCon? or just happening to be heading down? Either way if I'm in town (I plan to be at OzSecCon) then yeah we should grab a beer, coffee or whatever floats your boat :)
