Just had a lad who got into trouble picking the front door lock with his new Southord set. Pick got stuck and he had to drill the lock out and with nowhere to get a replacement at this time of night he had to pay for a locksmith to come and sort it out for him.

On the plus side, he called me and I was able to give him an old lock to play with and I directed him to the forum so hopefully he will have learnt his lesson and has found a good hobby.

OK, I've said 'hello' and been bowled over by the awesomely warm reception (thank you all) and now I've read and understood the Rules. I'm thinking that deserves a fresh brew of coffee and a stroll round the boards.

I have read the rules, they seem very reasonable.

Many thanks

7. Competitions - A member running the competition can make their own rules, but unless otherwise stated, a member needs to have at least 10 rep points to enter a competition.

How does one go about gaining rep points?

They are given to you by other members if you do something kind, post a picture of a lock you've picked or a pick you've made etc.

Hint - post a lot, ask questions..

;)

Thank you for the reply.... and now for a follow up question... How does one go about giving rep points? is there a button to press (I fear my eye sight is failing because I can't find one)? or do i type something in? (I've seen +1 in some replies)

There is a small green arrow under your profile picture. People write '+1' to indicate they've pressed this button.
Reputation is one way to show people are trusted by no means should it be a goal to reach a high reputation.
Just stick around and post questions, pictures, and insightful comments and you'll get the trust within a month.

Why was it set to 15? I'm just curious. Were people abusing it?

Just general consensus, stops spammers giving out lots of +1's to each other.

Has the forum been migrated or had some other major change recently? All the "because..." links in the first post just take me to the home page :(

Presumably they're meant to link to some explanations, or maybe a humorous story about "ah, yes, we did that once, and look what happened..."?

Thank you, craven! +1 for pointing that out!

Yes, you are correct, the forum wsa recently migrated from different software - I'll add updating those links to the "to do" list.

Proposal to amend the rules because of common misconception. This has been explained many times but never really made its way into the rules.
Add:
X. Combination locks - Posts that include the picking, bypass or manipulation of combination locks are not permitted on the open forum. Because off common low security use of combination locks and little skill and tools required to open them. Also because more complex combination locks are near the boundary of safe locks.

That is if I remember the reasoning correctly.

Also we should clarify "Posts that include the picking, bypass or manipulation of".
No pictures of these types of locks and tools / no pictures of these types of locks picked / ok to say you picked it as long as you don't discuss how.

Yes, I am proposing this because I broke the rule :16: And I am thankful to the admin who corrected me. But also because this common knowledge (which apparently doesn't save even medium term members) might not be so common to new members.

Right, this is my thoughts on this (it hasn't been discussed by the Lock gods,to my knowledge)......

To save any confusion with the non VIP's I would think it easier not to mention combination locks or show them outside of VIP.

That way no accidental slip ups can occur.

Anyway on with the show folks, nothing to see here :c017:

I would agree with that, it just gets confusing for everyone.
